“The animal portraits of Catherine Smith offer us a unique mixture of these levels of engagement and expression. It is rare to see animals so isolated from their surroundings and other animals and we are forced to witness a certain humanness in these creatures. Or is the animus in ourown humanity that we begin to feel? The dialogue is now turned inward on the viewers as they must begin to reflect on just what it is they see and feel in these works.”
